Read aloud
Rehearsing a script for performance is a highly motivating way to implement repeated readings. Repeated readings promote an important reading skill known as fluency. Fluency is how a student reads text aloud. There are three parts to fluency Accuracy the ability to recognize a word and pronounce it properly Automaticity the ability to read a word correctly and effortlessly Prosody the ability to read a word with appropriate expression and phrasing so it sounds like natural speech. Traditional approaches to fluency instruction focus on the first two, but rarely are programs implemented to effectively increase a student’s prosody (Young & Rasinski, 2009) Prosody is a huge indicator of whether a student is understanding text. And Comprehension, how student understands text, is the ultimate goal of reading. |
